CAMERA OVERVIEW

The FASTCAM ORION S40 is a high-performance standalone high-speed camera system that combines industry-leading light sensitivity with advanced noise reduction technologies—BSI (Back Side Illumination) and CDS (Correlated Double Sampling). These innovations enable exceptionally clean images with improved black level resolution and dynamic range, particularly valuable for applications such as Digital Image Correlation (DIC), Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), and other precision scientific and industrial imaging tasks.

With a 1.3-megapixel CMOS sensor (1280 x 1024), the ORION S40 captures full-resolution images at 31,250fps and can achieve frame rates up to 312,500fps with reduced resolution. The camera features a global electronic shutter down to 1.0µs and supports both monochrome and color configurations with ISO ratings of 40,000 and 10,000 respectively. The large 16µm pixel pitch further enhances sensitivity in low-light conditions.

The camera is equipped with a ruggedized mechanical calibration shutter for remote black level calibration and features a high-speed 10-Gigabit Ethernet interface for fast data transfer and camera control. Internal memory options include 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB, with support for up to 128 memory partitions. This allows the user to download one event while continuing to record another, optimizing workflow in demanding test environments.

Lens flexibility is a standout feature, with the standard Nikon G-Type mount supporting full aperture control, plus optional C-mount and Canon EF mounts for remote control of focus and aperture, including autofocus when paired with PFV software.

Designed for versatility and durability, the ORION S40 operates in ambient temperatures up to 40°C and includes mounting points on all four sides of the camera body, allowing for flexible setup in vertical or horizontal orientations—ideal for tensile or drop testing environments.

With support for advanced software features such as HDR mode, image overlay, background subtraction, and virtual pixel binning, along with SDKs for MATLAB and LabVIEW integration, the ORION S40 is a compact, reliable, and extremely capable tool for researchers and engineers seeking precise high-speed image capture.
