After a streak of record-breaking years, PACK EXPO Las Vegas is celebrating its 20th anniversary on an upward trend. As ever, the show represents the absolute latest innovations and leads the trends in the processing and packaging industry.

The show features a number of interactive venues for attendees right on the show floor, including industry-specific lounges, resource centers and the Innovation Stage, where educational sessions are presented throughout the day.

In 2015, nearly 2,000 exhibiting companies offering processing and packaging solutions will connect with nearly 30,000 industry professionals from 40 vertical markets on an 800,000 net square feet exhibit floor that buzzes with technologies in action.

New! Fastec TS5-H

Fastec_TS5Fastec Imaging announces the TS5-H, a new High-Definition addition to the highly successful handheld TS3Cine and TS3/TS4 “Troubleshooter” high-speed camera lines. Whether it’s used for troubleshooting a factory, or for research in a lab, or bolted to a Kessler CineDrive in a cinematic studio setting, or in a sports stadium… or at the beach, the TS5-H is designed to help any shooter create vivid high-speed video.

Based on a brand-new state-of-the-art 5MP sensor, the TS5-H offers the same convenient touchscreen controls and streamlined workflow as its predecessors, with superior imaging characteristics.

According to Tom Boldt for Fastec, “We believe that compelling imagery is valuable in commercial applications, on public media, in a laboratory, and even on a production line floor.”  Mr. Boldt continues, “In the TS3 and TS4 we have the high-speed camera performance needed for most applications, built into a form-factor our users love, and sold at an affordable price. The TS5-H remains faithful to these same precepts with enhanced performance at higher resolutions, the same revered form factor, and a base price that remains well under $20K USD.”

High-speed cameras generally operate differently than “normal” video cameras. They must often capture events that happen so quickly that they are well under way or even finished by the time an operator can press a record button. For this reason high-speed cameras record into a circular memory buffer that continually stores a couple of seconds of “pre-trigger” footage so nothing is missed due to the slow reaction time of the human operator. The TS cameras operate this way, but they also offer creative recording modes that leverage the presence of onboard storage media. The solid state drive (SSD) option, for example, may be used to save images and free up the high-speed buffers, for direct streaming of high-speed data, or hybrid modes that give the user the most performance and flexibility.

Providing mega pixel resolution (1,280 wide by 1,024 pixels tall) to 4,800 frames per second (fps), the FASTCAM Multi utilizes one or two compact camera heads that can be remotely connected to the central processor.

With a 1µs global shutter option and light sensitivity precisely tested to the ISO 12232 Ssat method of 10,000 for the 12-bit monochrome version, and 5,000 for the color, the FASTCAM Multi’s small camera head (60mm W x 70mm H x 151mm D and weighing less than 1Kg) is ideally suited for use in areas where larger standalone camera systems cannot fit or cannot be risked due to the threat of damage to the saved image storage, with the Multi the camera processor can be safely located out of harm’s way and retains data even if a camera cable is damaged during your test. Furthermore, the FASTCAM Multi has its electronics sealed against dust or debris often encountered in explosive or other extreme tests. As with all Photron cameras, we are so confident of the FASTCAM Multi’s reliability we provide a standard product warranty for a full two years after delivery.

The FASTCAM Multi is available with three memory options:
8GB – providing just over one second record duration at 1,280 x 720 HD resolution at 6K fps.
16GB – enables full 1,280 by 1,024 pixel resolution at 4,800 fps for 0.9 seconds.
32GB – can record full resolution at 2,000 fps for 8.7 seconds.

The FASTCAM Multi is supplied with both C-mount and Nikon F (G-mount compatible) mounts and a of Micro Four Thirds mount with built-in LED laser pointer option, and is fully compatible with our award winning Photron FASTCAM Viewer (PFV) camera control/image editing software, including wrappers for both MATLAB and LabVIEW.

History of Motion Engineering

Prior to forming Motion Engineering Consultants (MEC) in December of 1986, Ron Jones sold high-speed video systems for Eastman Kodak’s Motion Analysis Services Division (MASD). After purchasing one of the high-speed Kodak systems himself, Ron began to provide an on-site consulting service to clients not yet in the market, or having the budget, to make a purchase. As the prices began to come down, MEC transitioned into more of a sales organization, as well as continuing to provide the on-site consulting services. In an effort to provide additional services to a growing customer base, Ron purchased several additional cameras to use for rentals. This became a great opportunity to provide customers hands-on use when challenged with a limited budget, or having a one-time need. The rental program has proven to be a great sales tool and has provided a respectable revenue stream.

MEC’s operating philosophy is based on always respecting the relationships they have with their customers and vendors. Doing what is best for the customer will always pay dividends of loyalty in the long run. By respecting their vendors, they are able to leverage their relationships in a positive way to gain greater access to technical knowledge and support, as well as to obtain competitive pricing.

New! Photron FASTCAM Mini UX100

Photron MiniPhotron is proud to announce the first in a new family of digital imaging solutions; the FASTCAM Mini UX100 high speed camera. Utilizing a digital CMOS sensor providing full 1,280 (H) by 1,024 (V) pixel resolution to 4,000 frames per second (fps) and reduced resolution operation all the way to 800,000 fps, with 1280(H) by 720 (V), equivalent for 720 HD video resolution, up to 6,400 fps. This makes the Mini UX100 a small and light weight camera ideally suited for applications as varied as life sciences, off board automotive testing or ballistic testing.

A global shutter provides blur free imagery with a minimum shutter speed of 1µs (dependent on the frame rate selected) with the 12-bit pixel depth (36-bit for the color version) from the CMOS pixels 10µm square pixel utilizing micro-lenses to maximize the light sensitivity.

Measuring in at 120mm wide by 120mm high and only 90mm deep, The Mini UX100 is self-contained so only requires power and Gig-E connection to your laptop. The Mini UX100 is supplied with both the Nikon F-mount (G-type lens compatible) and C-mount, operated from 0°C to 40°C and weighs in at only 1.5 Kg excluding lens or accessories.

TS4 Dual-Mode Camera

Fastec TS4Fastec Imaging’s new handheld TS4 camera, with dual operating modes, provides flexible high-speed video recording with unique capabilities. In “Standard Record (SR)” mode, the TS4 functions as a traditional high-speed camera, recording seconds of action to an internal frame buffer at very high frame rates. In “Long Record (LR)” mode, the TS4 is a complete long-record system capable of recording continuously to Solid State Drives (SSDs) at slightly lower frame rates, for several minutes to a few hours.

The TS4 eliminates the need for external PC setup and bulky storage systems by combining a handheld form factor and a touchscreen display with a high-speed image sensor and a built-in mSATA SSD. Operating on battery power for up to four hours, the TS4 is a completely portable, self-contained high-speed camera system. “Finally, a high speed camera that can be used as simply as any other camera we use in our everyday lives.” proclaims Matt Kearney, VP of Sales for Fastec Imaging. “Our goal at Fastec has always been to simplify the traditionally complicated workflow of high-speed imaging.
